Just a quick note about our vote count

Hi Everyone,

First, I'd like to thank everyone that helped out on this campaign!  Whether you contributed monetarily, by volunteering to walk or make phone calls, or just by spreading the word to Natomas residents, everyone worked together to move this campaign forward.  It has been an incredible experience working with my old friends as well as the many new friends that we have met. I value each and every one of them and will keep the ties going forward no matter what.

We were consistently in 3rd place throughout the evening on election day, and then we dropped down to 4th place early Wednesday morning.  We are currently only 206 votes shy of 3rd place.  There are thousands of ballots yet to be counted, so we will wait and see how the results end up.  We should get an update this afternoon at 3:00 and then 2 or 3 updates next week.

Thanks again for everything you've done for our campaign!  It is because of your support that we are so close to winning this one.

Keep on!

Karen Endorsed by Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan!

I'm very happy to announce that I've earned the endorsement of Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan!

Dr. Pan with Karen at the Labor Day Picnic

Dr. Pan has represented Natomas in the State Assembly since 2010.  His willingness to listen to the concerns of Natomas parents and school staff regarding serious ongoing issues within the Natomas School Unified School district has made all the difference in the world. When many were about to give up because district leadership ignored the ever growing voices of frustrated parents and district employees, he listened. His public support of the students, parents, teachers, and employees who have had to suffer the consequences of irresponsible decisions by the current school board has meant a lot to many of us.  I know I speak for many when I say "THANK YOU" from the bottom of our collective heart!

Democracy for America has endorsed our campaign!

Today, I am proud to announce that our campaign has been endorsed by Democracy For America!

Democracy for America endorses Karen Bernal for Natomas School Board

Democracy for America, the people-powered PAC, has over one million members nationwide. DFA is a grassroots powerhouse working to change our country and the Democratic Party from the bottom-up.  DFA grew out of the Howard Dean for President campaign in 2004 and I am extremely honored to have their support.

A snippet from their endorsement letter:

So, on behalf of our more than one million members nationwide, and especially our more than 250,000 members in California, I want to congratulate you on earning the support of our members and the endorsement of our national community.

I know you'll work with DFA members on the ground to win this race, take back our country and fight for real, progressive change. I look forward to working with your campaign and our members in California to make it happen.

Again, congratulations on earning the support of our members and the endorsement from our national community.

Can you please join our People-Powered campaign and contribute $10 right now to help us reach 100 more voters?

As I mentioned before, the last election was decided by only 20 votes, so with 10 candidates in the race this time, every vote is crucial in this campaign!

Lawn Signs Are Here!

Karen Bernal for Natomas School Board lawn sign

Help us identify voters to give them to!

Our lawn signs are being printed right now!  If you live in the Natomas area, please let me know if you would like a sign in your yard by clicking here You can also pick them up at our precinct walk this weekend (see below).

Absentee ballots are already in the hands of voters, so please do what you can to help me reach them by knocking on some doors with us this weekend.  We need to identify which voters want a lawn sign in their yard, so can you come out this weekend and help me identify them?

These signs won't be very helpful if we don't ID the voters that want them.  With less than 3 weeks until Election Day, we need to get out there right now!

As you may know, lawn signs are pretty expensive ($5 - $7 ea), so if you are able to chip in $5 or $10 to help cover some of the costs, please click here.

Proud of my new endorsements - Torlakson, Jones & Shiroma!

I am honored to announce the following major endorsements to my campaign.  Please click here if I can add your endorsement as well.

Tom Torlakson, CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction

As the highest elected education official in California, I am extremely honored to have his support.  Tom, a public education teacher himself, knows first-hand what is needed on our school boards.  When Tom was a member of our state legislature, he acted to improve student nutrition and physical education, give schools the funding support they need to ensure academic achievement, and fought to reduce the dropout rate. He has also worked diligently to protect education funding. If elected, I will fight to restore these important services to all students in the district!

Dave Jones, CA Insurance Commissioner

I have followed Dave's career from Sacramento City Council to State Assembly, and now as our state's Insurance Commissioner.  In 2008, his Assembly Bill 2759 created the nation’s largest early childhood education and preschool program to give children the best possible start.  Whether he is advocating for seniors, our children, our environment, health care, or consumer protections, he has always been a leader that Sacramento is proud to boast as their own. I am proud to have Dave as one of my supporters.

Genevieve Shiroma, Director, SMUD Ward 4

Genevieve has served the citizens of Sacramento proudly as one of our SMUD Directors, giving us some of the lowest utility rates in the state.  As a former member of the Air Resources Board, she worked on regulations and programs affecting landfills, hazardous waste, pesticides, and air toxic hot spot sources, all of which were important to citizens of our state (especially our children).  Genevieve has always provided a voice for those that are often voiceless, something that I have admired, and one of the reasons I am glad that she is supporting my campaign.

My First Fundraiser!

Please join me along with hosts Mike Whiteside, Rich Hundrieser, and Rick Guerrero for an evening of fine food and great friends. Chefs Hundrieser and Whiteside will dazzle your taste buds with delectable eats and wonderful drinks.

A big Thank You to the event sponsors we have so far: Bruce Pomer, Sacramento County Young Democrats, Latino Democratic Club of Sacramento, Green Democratic Club of Sacramento, Rose Roach and Mary Ellen Asebedo.

With absentee ballots going into the mail on Oct. 8th, it is crucial that we continue getting my message out to voters right now. Your contributions will help me pay for the mailers and voter contact necessary to lead us to victory!
